How to Return a Rental Car at Jeju Airport

Your Jeju road trip is almost over, and the last thing you want is a stressful scramble to hand back the car before your flight. Returning a rental car at Jeju Airport works a little differently from most airports, so a few minutes of planning saves a lot of worry. This guide walks foreign travelers through the whole process: fuel, the final inspection, the shuttle back to the terminal, and how much time to leave before departure.

Why returning a car at Jeju Airport is different

There are no rental counters or return lots inside Jeju International Airport itself. Every rental company runs its own office near the airport, and a free shuttle bus connects those offices to the terminal. According to Jeju International Airport's official guidance, the shuttle stop sits at the Rental Car House just outside Gate 5: you exit the terminal, cross the street in front of Gates 3 and 5, and follow the covered walkway to the Rental Car House to board your operator's shuttle.

For returns, the same system runs in reverse. You drive the car back to your rental company's office, complete the return there, then ride the operator's shuttle back to the terminal. If you picked the car up this way on arrival, the route will feel familiar. If you are unsure where your office is, check your booking confirmation or our Jeju Airport pickup guide.

Before you head back: fuel, cleaning, and belongings

Most Jeju rentals use a full-to-full fuel policy, which means you collect the car with a full tank and return it full. Fill up at a gas station near your rental office before you drop off, and keep the receipt. If you return with less fuel than the policy requires, the company can charge a refueling fee that is usually higher than the pump price. Our Jeju fuel policy guide explains the common options in detail.

Before you hand back the keys, do a quick sweep: check the glovebox, door pockets, under the seats, and the trunk for phones, chargers, passports, and shopping. Remove any trash. You do not need a professional cleaning, but a reasonably tidy car avoids cleaning charges.

At the return lot: inspection and paperwork

When you arrive at the office, a staff member checks the car's exterior and interior for new damage and confirms the fuel level and mileage. This is the moment small disputes can appear, so protect yourself: walk around the car and take clear, time-stamped photos of every side, the wheels, and the interior before you hand over the keys. Our damage photo checklist shows exactly what to capture. Orcar does not collect a security deposit or place a security hold, so there is no Orcar security deposit or hold to release after return.

Getting back to the terminal by shuttle

After the return is confirmed, board your operator's free shuttle back to Jeju International Airport. Shuttles run frequently during the day, often every few minutes (some operators publish intervals of roughly 6 to 16 minutes depending on traffic), but they can be slower and busier during peak season and on weekends. Plan to board with time to spare, and ask staff which departure to take if you are close to your flight time.

How much time to leave before your flight

Build in more buffer than you think you need. The return itself, the shuttle ride, and airport check-in all add up. Major Jeju operators advise arriving at the rental office at least one hour before your flight departs, and that is a minimum: during the summer high season and on weekends, give yourself extra time for traffic and shuttle queues. A safe habit is to leave the rental office about two hours before a domestic flight, and earlier for international departures.

After-hours and late returns

Return hours are often shorter than pickup hours and can close earlier in the evening, so a late flight does not always mean a late return is possible. Confirm your operator's last return time and last shuttle when you book, and message them in advance if your schedule is tight. If something goes wrong on the way back, such as a delay or a minor incident, contact your rental company right away. Our emergency contact guide covers who to call.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I return a rental car at Jeju Airport?

You return it to your rental company's own office near the airport, not at the terminal. After the return, you take the company's free shuttle from the Rental Car House area back to the terminal at Gate 5.

How early should I return my car before my flight?

Plan for at least one hour before departure as a minimum, and more during peak season. You need time for the inspection, the shuttle ride, and check-in.

Do I need to refuel before returning the car?

Usually yes. Most Jeju rentals use a full-to-full policy, so return the car with a full tank and keep the receipt to avoid a refueling fee.

What if my flight is very early or very late?

Check your operator's return and shuttle hours, which are often more limited than pickup hours. If your flight falls outside those hours, arrange the return time with the company in advance.

Will I be charged for small scratches at return?

It depends on your insurance and the damage. Photograph the car thoroughly before handover so you can show its condition. Orcar does not collect a security deposit or place a security hold.
