Korea Rental Car IDP Rejected? Orcar Findings

An International Driving Permit can look valid and still fail a rental car identity check when its personal details do not match the other documents in the booking. Orcar reviewed the latest verification result for 950 de-identified driver profiles. Among the 11 rejected results, nine carried a birth-date mismatch and two carried a name mismatch.

This article explains what that small but useful operational sample means, what it does not mean, and how to check your documents before renting a car in Korea.

Quick answer: compare two fields before upload

If your Korea rental car IDP is rejected, compare the following details character by character across your passport, IDP, home-country license, and reservation:

  1. Date of birth: confirm the day, month, and year represent the same date on every document.
  2. Full legal name: confirm every required given name and family name is present and belongs to the same traveler.

Do not keep submitting the same files if the underlying details disagree. First identify the mismatch, then ask the rental provider which document or booking field needs correction.

What Orcar's verification data shows

Orcar analyzed each driver's latest verification status recorded from April 8 through August 16, 2026. The aggregate contains no names, document numbers, images, or other identifying information.

The rejection reasons were concentrated in two fields:

Reason on rejected resultCountShare of 11 rejections
Birth-date mismatch981.8%
Name mismatch218.2%

How to read this: the sample describes Orcar's latest verification outcomes during this period. It is not an industry-wide rejection rate, and 11 rejections are too few to rank every possible IDP problem. The reason codes show which field disagreed, not why the traveler or issuing document displayed it that way.

Compare the same personal details across every document before the rental car identity check.

1. Check the date of birth as a date, not a format

A date can be printed as day-month-year on one document and year-month-day on another. Different display order is not automatically a mismatch. The underlying calendar date must still be identical.

Use this check:

  • Read the labels or document legend before interpreting the numbers.
  • Write the date once in an unambiguous format, such as 17 August 1992.
  • Compare that date with the passport, IDP, home license, and booking profile.
  • If one source is genuinely different, contact the issuer or rental provider. Do not guess which value the verification system expects.

In Orcar's sample, birth-date mismatch appeared on nine of the 11 rejected latest results. That makes it the first field worth checking, not proof that date format causes every rejection.

2. Check the full name without inventing a correction

Names are harder to compare across writing systems. A passport may separate surname and given names, while another document may reverse the display order. Middle names, spacing, and transliteration can also make two records look different.

Start with the passport's machine-readable identity as the booking reference, then compare whether the IDP and home license clearly refer to the same person. Do not remove a middle name or change the order merely to make the strings look alike. Orcar's aggregate reason code identifies a name mismatch, but it does not show which formatting pattern caused either of the two cases.

What to bring for a rental car in Korea

The Korea Tourism Organization says foreign travelers generally need to meet the age requirement, carry an International Driving Permit, and present a passport. Its general driving guide also advises carrying the home-country license because some rental companies require it. Requirements can vary by provider, vehicle class, issuing country, and current policy, so verify your booking terms before departure.[1][2] Orcar collects payment when you book. No security deposit or security hold is required. The payment card does not need to be in the driver's or the booker's name.

  • Physical International Driving Permit accepted for Korea
  • Original home-country driver's license

  • Reservation confirmation with the driver's legal details

A photo, scan, or digital wallet copy may help you organize your trip, but it should not be assumed to replace an original document at pickup.

Five-minute pre-upload checklist

  1. Place your passport, IDP, and home license side by side.
  2. Confirm the date of birth represents the same calendar date on all three.
  3. Confirm the documents identify the same full legal name, even if name order differs.
  4. Check that the reservation belongs to the actual driver who will collect the car.
  5. Make sure each document is current and physically available for pickup.
  6. If a field differs, contact support before travel instead of repeatedly uploading the same documents.

FAQ

Does a different date format mean my IDP is invalid?

No. A different display order can still represent the same date. Read each label carefully and compare the actual day, month, and year. A genuine difference should be resolved with the issuer or rental provider.

Can I use only my IDP to rent a car in Korea?

Do not plan on the IDP alone. Official Korea tourism guidance lists a passport as well, and advises carrying the home-country license because some companies request it.[1][2] For Orcar, the payment cardholder may differ from the driver or booker.

Will Orcar automatically reject every spelling difference?

The aggregate data cannot support that conclusion. It records two latest results with a name-mismatch reason, but it does not expose the exact spelling, transliteration, or document layout involved. Ask support to review a real discrepancy rather than guessing.

What should I do after an IDP rejection?

Compare the date of birth and full name first. If the documents genuinely disagree, contact the document issuer or rental provider. If they represent the same information in different formats, provide that context to support and follow the provider's review process.
