What Happens After Booking a Rental Car?

A rental car confirmation is the start of the pickup process, not the end of it. The details that cause the most uncertainty often appear after payment: whether the reservation is confirmed, which driver must verify, where pickup happens, and what to do if plans change.

Orcar reviewed 2,423 customer messages across 925 support sessions from January through July 2026. The recurring questions point to five checks that every traveler can make before collection.

Quick answer: check these five items after booking

  1. Reservation: confirm the booking status, dates, times, location, and reference number.
  2. Driver readiness: make sure every required driver has completed the requested document or identity steps.
  3. Price and coverage: save the final amount, payment status and selected protection. Orcar requires no security deposit or security hold.
  4. Pickup: follow the exact provider, location, shuttle, counter, or contactless instructions for your reservation.
  5. Return and support: know where to find change, return, and urgent-help instructions before you need them.

Do not assume one company's process applies to another booking. A confirmation email proves that a reservation record exists, but pickup readiness can still depend on documents, payment method, operating hours, and location-specific instructions.

What 2,423 Orcar customer messages reveal

Orcar's product research reviewed 2,423 customer messages across 925 sessions from January through July 2026. Repeated question areas included pickup guidance, location and self-pickup; return, damage and fuel; driver verification; and checkout, payment and reservation creation.

Journey stageQuestion travelers need answered
ConfirmationIs my reservation valid, and where can I find it?
Driver checkWho must submit which document, and is it approved?
PickupWhere do I go, what do I show, and is a shuttle or self-pickup step involved?
During the rentalHow do I change the booking or get help with an issue?
ReturnWhere and when do I return, and what proof or fuel step is required?

Methodology limit: support records overrepresent confusion and problems. The themes overlap, so they should not be added together or treated as percentages of all renters. This analysis identifies the questions a post-booking experience should answer, not an industry-wide failure rate.

The five post-booking checks, step by step

1. Save the reservation record

Check the reservation number, driver name, pickup and return date, local time, location, vehicle category, and current status. Hertz says its confirmation email includes the reference number and booking details and recommends keeping it until after the rental.[1] If the email and account page disagree, contact the provider before travel.

2. Complete driver requirements early

Confirm who will actually collect and drive the car. The booker and primary driver are not always the same person. Review every requested license, passport, International Driving Permit, and age requirement. If a document is rejected, fix the underlying mismatch rather than repeatedly uploading the same file. Orcar's IDP rejection findings and identity verification guide explain common checks. For Orcar, the payment cardholder may differ from the driver or booker.

3. Review payment and coverage

Save the paid amount and selected coverage. Orcar collects payment when you book. No security deposit or security hold is required. The payment card does not need to be in the driver's or the booker's name. For other providers, the US Federal Trade Commission notes that rental companies often block an amount above the agreed rental cost to cover possible final charges. It also advises comparing the total price, fees, fuel, toll, mileage and coverage terms.[2] That general industry guidance does not mean Orcar requires a security hold. Review the terms for your own reservation.

4. Read the exact pickup method

Pickup is not one universal flow. SIXT describes a counter process where staff verify a license, ID and payment card, review the agreement, document existing damage and hand over the keys.[3] Hertz describes an eligible online flow where travelers check in from a phone, receive a vehicle assignment and go to the car, while some additions still require a counter visit.[4] Your booking may use a counter, shuttle, lockbox or contactless handoff. Follow only the instructions attached to your reservation.

5. Find the return and help path now

Before pickup day, locate the return address, opening hours, fuel rule, evidence or photo requirements, extension process, and urgent contact. Saving these details early reduces last-minute searching. If instructions are not yet available, note when and where the provider says they will appear.

If a detail changes before pickup

  1. Open the reservation source of truth, such as My Booking, the provider account, or the latest confirmed email.
  2. Compare the changed field with your saved confirmation.
  3. Use the reservation-specific support channel and include the reference number.
  4. Ask for the updated status or instruction in writing.
  5. Recheck all connected fields. A pickup-time change may also affect opening hours, shuttle timing, or late-arrival rules.

What a useful post-booking hub should answer

A traveler should not have to reconstruct a rental from scattered messages. A useful reservation page should answer eight questions at a glance:

  • Is the reservation confirmed, pending, changed, cancelled, or refunded?
  • What was paid, and what coverage was selected?
  • Who is the primary driver?
  • Is driver verification complete?
  • What action is still missing?
  • Where and how does pickup happen?
  • Where and how does return happen?
  • How can support access the reservation without asking the traveler to start over?

This is the product lesson behind Orcar's research: the most useful post-booking experience is not another generic confirmation. It is one current view of reservation readiness from payment through return.

FAQ

Does a confirmation email mean I am ready to pick up the car?

Not always. It confirms the reservation record, but driver documents, online check-in or location-specific steps may still be required. Orcar collects payment when you book. No security deposit or security hold is required. The payment card does not need to be in the driver's or the booker's name.

When should I complete rental car verification?

Complete it as soon as the provider requests it. Early submission leaves time to correct a name, date, document or image problem before pickup day.

What should I save after booking a rental car?

Save the reservation number, current status, dates and local times, locations, driver details, price, coverage, payment terms and records, pickup instructions, return instructions, and support contact.

What if pickup instructions are missing?

Check the provider account and latest confirmed message first. If the location, time or handoff method is still unclear, contact the reservation-specific support channel before travel and ask when final instructions will be available.
